Effective Procedures

An intuitive notion concerned with the question of whether there is a method, not requiring creativity at any point, which will solve a problem.

There are various formulations of this notion. TM computability is one.

Church's Thesis

All procedures, all characterizations of effective procedures that are intuitively satisfactory describe the same set of solvable problems.

In particular, any effective procedure can be instantiated on a TM.
