Word limit:      1500

Worth:             30%

Instruction:     Answer one question from the following selection.

  1. What is Pascal's Wager? Describe and critically analyse that argument for belief in God.

  2. It is commonly observed that there is a lot of evil in the world: why is this supposed to be a problem for those who believe in God? Describe and critically analyse some of the responses that believers can make to this problem.

  3. The 'Forms' play an essential role in Plato's theory of knowledge. Explain this theory and the role that the Forms play. Is this theory plausible? Explain why you think so. (Please use the standard Stephanus numbers for referencing Plato.)

  4. How did Aristotle explain or defend the possibility of objective knowledge about the world? Critically analyse his claims. (Please use the standard Bekker numbers for referencing Aristotle.)

  5. In his skeptical argument Descartes conceives the possibility of a certain Demon in order to cast doubt on some of our most basic 'knowledge'. Describe and critically analyse the role that this Demon plays in the argument. Is it really possible to doubt the things that Descartes says that we can doubt because of the possibility of the Demon?

NB. I have found in the past that in answering questions concerning God, students are inclined to reference popular religious websites or apologetical literature. This is usually a bad idea, since the relevant issues are not usually covered with appropriate thoroughness or philosophical sophistication. Try to concentrate on the arguments and counterarguments (and counter-counter arguments) as they are given in respectable philosophical sources.
