{"id":838,"date":"2026-06-29T11:22:01","date_gmt":"2026-06-29T11:22:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stevewatson.info\/blog\/?p=838"},"modified":"2026-06-29T13:07:14","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T13:07:14","slug":"against-the-silurian-hypothesis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stevewatson.info\/blog\/2026\/06\/29\/against-the-silurian-hypothesis\/","title":{"rendered":"Against the Silurian Hypothesis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Some have speculated that humans are not the first intelligent life to form a civilization on Earth, that there might have been civilizations created by intelligent dinosaurs millions of years ago that have disappeared and because of the effects of time have left no obvious traces. The name of this \u2018Silurian Hypothesis\u2019 refers to an episode of Doctor Who<\/span><a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">in which the Silurians, an ancient reptilian race, attempt to emerge from hibernation after a long absence. The idea in various forms has since had a lot of traction in popular culture<\/span><a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, and there are also a good number of serious scientific investigations into it \u2013 though in the latter case the main interest is not actually in the idea of intelligent dinosaurs but in using that speculation as a point of departure for investigations into the kinds of evidence there might be of <em>any<\/em> industrial civilization after millions of years.<\/span><a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One critique of this possibility that I never see addressed is that the brain complexity of life decreases very rapidly as one retreats in time. It\u2019s unlikely that there would have been enough brain power before the rise of mammals to create any sort of civilization.
