Questions on Functionalism

1. In 'A for Andromeda' Fred Hoyle imagined a vast cloud of interstellar gas that was sentient. Supposing that only normal signals connected the physical parts of the cloud, it would operate at very low speeds. Supposing also that functionalism was correct, what would such a mind be aware of. Similarly for a tree: what could it be aware of?

2. If functionalism was true, would it be possible to build a mind-reading device?
